Removing the Stub Axle Distance Piece

The distance piece, as it’s referred to in the manual, is the machined loop that provides a perfect surface for the oil seal to seal against. Unfortunately one of the distance pieces featured a worn groove. The other side was fine (as were both on the rear).

I expected removing the distance piece to be a nightmare. I have a copy of the Haynes ‘Restoration Manual’ (came with the car). The instructions state ‘crack the distance piece with a large chisel’. I dont know what type of chisels they have over in the UK, but my chisels have never successfully cracked or split anything like this. They are good at mangling things though.

A distinctive slot has been bashed into the distance piece, but no cracking.

Plan B. Drill a couple of holes, being careful not to drill through to the stub axle.

The distance piece never ‘cracked’ but it did loosen to the point that it was easily removed.
